Abstract

Wooden ships become one element that makes up the Indonesian maritime industry. Many wooden ship orders from domestic and abroad to be used as fishing vessels or tourism vessels have made the wooden shipbuilding industry develop. But unfortunately, the development of this industry has had a severe impact on the forest's wood population. The good news comes from researches on steel frames as a substitute for wooden frames in wooden boat construction. Although the analyses have not been conducted on all types of wooden boats, applying this study's results will significantly impact reducing the use of wood in the boat's construction. This paper examines the impact of the construction of wooden ships and the application of steel frames as a substitute for wooden frames in the construction of wooden boats in Indonesia's forests. From the analysis, it is concluded that the area of forest for the purpose of building wooden ships is 14.5 hectares per year throughout Indonesia. By applying steel frames to substitute wooden frames, the reduction in wooden use can be as much as 15%, and hence the total number of trees to be cut is reduced for about 1,822 trees from 12,147 to 10,325 trees.
